Silverton Dark Sky Community

The Town of Silverton is actively working toward achieving designation as an International Dark Sky Community through dedicated efforts made by San Juan Development and the town’s Community Development Director. This initiative is part of a broader movement in Colorado, where communities such as Westcliffe and Silver Cliff have already received this designation, becoming the state’s first certified Dark Sky Communities in 2015.

In 2021, Silverton’s Board of Trustees passed a resolution supporting the town’s application for Dark Sky Community certification. This resolution shows Silverton’s commitment to reducing light pollution and fostering public awareness about the importance of dark skies. The application process involves demonstrating a strong dedication to preserving the night sky through the implementation and enforcement of quality outdoor lighting ordinances, educational initiatives, and community support.

Achieving Dark Sky Community status would not only enhance Silverton’s appeal as a destination for stargazing but also contribute to environmental conservation and the well-being of residents by mitigating light pollution. As of March 2025, Silverton continues to advance its efforts, aligning with the mission of DarkSky International to restore the nighttime environment and protect communities from the harmful effects of light pollution.
